Self-knowledge quotes, some great aphorisms and thoughts about self-knowledge, the foundation of true knowledge, and a great help to real happiness and success.
Self-knowledge is a term used in psychology to describe the information that an individual draws upon when finding an answer to the question “What am I like?”. Self-knowledge is a component of the self or, more accurately, the self-concept. It is the knowledge of oneself and one’s properties and the desire to seek such knowledge that guide the development of the self-concept, even if that concept is flawed.
In philosophy, “self-knowledge” standardly refers to knowledge of one’s own mental states, that is, of what one is feeling or thinking, or what one believes or desires. At least since Descartes, most philosophers have believed that self-knowledge differs markedly from our knowledge of the external world.
Self-knowledge informs us of our mental representations of ourselves, which contain attributes that we uniquely pair with ourselves, and theories on whether these attributes are stable or dynamic, to the best that we can evaluate ourselves. The self-concept is thought to have three primary aspects: the cognitive self, the affective self and the executive self.
This above all, To thine own self be true; And it must follow, as the night the day, Then canst not then be false to any man.
Shakespeare.
Self-knowledge is no guarantee of happiness, but it is on the side of happiness and can supply the courage to fight for it.
Simone de Beauvoir
Self knowledge puts us on our knees, and it is very necessary for love. For knowledge of God gives love, and knowledge of self gives humility
Mother Teresa
They always say “You have to be yourself”, and what’s more “You must know yourself”. That’s very reasonable indeed, but what if one is a true moron?
Carl William Brown
Self-knowledge is the foundation of real success.
Rachel Simmons
The soul, who is lifted by a very great and yearning desire for the honor of God and the salvation of souls, begins by exercising herself, for a certain space of time, in the ordinary virtues, remaining in the cell of self-knowledge, in order to know better the goodness of God towards her.
Catherine of Siena
All knowledge ultimately means Self-knowledge.
Bruce Lee
If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941, British novelist, essayist)
To young people born under the weird planet of the SAT, intelligence was equated with agility, with raw acuity. It produced a certain sort of person of which I was a typical specimen: the mental contortionist, able to rise to almost every challenge placed before him, except the challenge of real self-knowledge.
Walter Kirn
Each has his past shut in him like the leaves of a book shown to him by heart, and his friends can only read the title.
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941, British novelist, essayist)

Analysis and synthesis ordinarily clarify matters for us about as much as taking a Swiss watch apart and dumping its wheels, springs, hands, threads, pivots, screws and gears into a layman’s hands for reassembling, clarifies a watch to a layman.

Nay, be a Columbus to whole new continents and worlds within you, opening new channels, not of trade, but of thought. Every man is the lord of a realm beside which the earthly empire of the Czar is but a petty state, a hummock left by the ice.
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862, American essayist, poet, naturalist)
How pathetically scanty my self-knowledge is compared with, say, my knowledge of my room. There is no such thing as observation of the inner world, as there is of the outer world.
Franz Kafka
I know myself as a human entity; the scene, so to speak, or thoughts are affection; and am sensible of certain doubleness by which I can stand as remote from myself as from another. However intense my experience, I am conscious of the presence and criticism of a part of me, which, as it were, is no part of me, but spectator, sharing no experience, but taking note of it, and that is no more I than it is you.

In the traditional urban novel, there is only survival or not. The suburban idea, the conformist idea, that agony can be seen to and cured by doctors or psychoanalysis or self-knowledge is nowhere to be found in the city. Talking is a way of life, but it is not a cure. Same with religion.

No one can teach writing, but classes may stimulate the urge to write. If you are born a writer, you will inevitably and helplessly write. A born writer has self-knowledge. Read, read, read. Carl Jung (1875-1961, Swiss psychiatrist)

Carl Jung (1875-1961, Swiss psychiatrist)
If people can be educated to see the lowly side of their own natures, it may be hoped that they will also learn to understand and to love their fellow men better. A little less hypocrisy and a little more tolerance towards oneself can only have good results in respect for our neighbor; for we are all too prone to transfer to our fellows the injustice and violence we inflict upon our own natures.

The most excellent and divine counsel, the best and most profitable advertisement of all others, but the least practiced, is to study and learn how to know ourselves. Percy Bysshe Shelley
He who seeks to approach his own buried past must conduct himself like a man digging. He must not be afraid to return again and again to the same matter; to scatter it as one scatters earth, to turn it over as one turns over soil. For the matter itself is only a deposit, a stratum, which yields only to the most meticulous examination what constitutes the real treasure hidden within the earth: the images, severed from all earlier associations, that stand – like precious fragments or torsos in a collector’s gallery – in the prosaic rooms of our later understanding.
Walter Benjamin (1982-1940, German critic, philosopher)
Only as you do know yourself can your brain serve you as a sharp and efficient tool. Know your failings, passions, and prejudices so you can separate them from what you see. Wislawa Szymborska
Self-searching is the means by which we bring new vision, action, and grace to bear upon the dark and negative side of our natures. With it comes the development of that kind of humility that makes it possible for us to receive God’s help… We find that bit by bit we can discard the old life – the one that did not work — for a new life that can and does work under conditions whatever.
